There are expansive views of the surrounding mountain ranges. Arctic Lupine, Mountain Monkshood, <a href=\"http:\/\/linnet.geog.ubc.ca\/ShowDBImage\/galleryMobile.aspx?page=0&amp;specrep=0&amp;code=PDRAN0L0S0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Subalpine Buttercup<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/linnet.geog.ubc.ca\/ShowDBImage\/galleryMobile.aspx?page=0&amp;specrep=0&amp;code=PDRAN0B0P0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Tall Larkspur<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Mertensia_paniculata\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Tall Bluebell<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/linnet.geog.ubc.ca\/ShowDBImage\/gallery.aspx?page=0&amp;specrep=0&amp;latinName=Castilleja%20miniata\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Indian Paintbrush<\/a>, White Bog-orchid and many other species fill this lush environment in between forests of <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Picea_engelmannii\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Engelmann Spruce<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Abies_lasiocarpa\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Subalpine Fir<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Higher up, on the exposed summit ridges, species flourish that can tolerate the dry, windswept environment. The short flowering season makes a mid to late July trip the most rewarding for the lover of alpine flowers. <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Silene_acaulis\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Moss Campion<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/linnet.geog.ubc.ca\/Atlas\/Atlas.aspx?sciname=Pedicularis%20langsdorfii%20ssp.%20arctica&amp;NoTransfer=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Langsdorf\u2019s Lousewort<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Campanula_lasiocarpa\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Mountain Harebell<\/a>, <a href=\"http:\/\/linnet.geog.ubc.ca\/Atlas\/Atlas.aspx?sciname=Saxifraga%20flagellaris%20ssp.%20setigera\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Stoloniferous Saxifrage<\/a>, and a variety of <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Aster_(genus)\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">aster<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Arnica\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">arnica<\/a> and daisy species are commonly encountered.<\/p>\n<p>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=&#8221;John Holzworth&#8221; tab_id=&#8221;1496026199211-c4fca611-3d38&#8243;][vc_column_text]John Holzworth was an explorer, lawyer and author sent to this region in 1923 by the U.S. Biological Survey. He was 35 years old at the time, and the purpose of the expedition was to investigate the distribution of mountain sheep and caribou. He described hunting by the small lake which is situated a kilometre west of the trailhead, and which is visible from the mountain summits along the hiking route. He wrote enthusiastically in his journal:<\/p>\n<p><em>For sheer joy and contentment, I know of nothing like this; a hundred miles or two from any civilisation and no human being within miles\u2026 the spell of the mountains.<\/em>[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section title=&#8221;Ptarmigan and Other Alpine Birds&#8221; tab_id=&#8221;1496026199321-f7f56d56-80a1&#8243;][vc_column_text]The Holzworth Meadows hiking route provides a good opportunity to look for two ptarmigan species, both of which breed here. The slightly larger <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Willow_ptarmigan\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Willow Ptarmigan <\/a>tends to inhabit the lusher environment of the subalpine meadows, while the <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/White-tailed_ptarmigan\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">White-tailed Ptarmigan<\/a> tends to occupy the highest, most exposed terrain on the ridge tops and summits.<\/p>\n<p>In flight the white outer tail feathers that give the White-tailed Ptarmigan its name make it easy to identify. Regardless of season, these birds are superbly camouflaged. Please tread carefully: the peak hiking season coincides with when these birds are raising their young who tend to scurry away rather than fly off.[\/vc_column_text][\/vc_tta_section][vc_tta_section
